Upgrading
- To upgrade from a previous version of CMS Made Simple, follow these steps:
- Read the UPGRADE.txt document in the doc directory of the NEW installation. It might overrule the information stated on this page!!!
- If you made manually modifications in the OLD installation, you must check if you have to make them again in the NEW installation.
- Backup your database and all the files in your CMS Made Simple folder on the server.
- Download the latest CMS Made Simple package.
- Upload the new files, overwriting all the files on your server.
- Navigate to <cmsmadesimple folder>/install/upgrade.php (upload install folder if you use diff package) and check your integrity CMSMS system in step #1. That automatically makes any necessary changes in the database.
- Delete the install folder after a successful upgrade
- If there is a patch upgrade available, otherwise known as a 'diff' such as cmsmadesimple-diff-1.2.2-1.2.3.zip (e.g. from 1.2.2 to 1.2.3), copy the archive into your CMS Made Simple home directory and unpack it there. It will unpack the changed files directly into their proper locations and not into a folder. There may not be an install script to run, in this case re-upload install folder from your prev package.
- Alternatively for patch upgrades, you could download the 'diff' package to your desktop, expand it on your desktop, then open the folder and ftp the contents of the entire folder directly into your CMS Made Simple home directory. The existing 'old' files in your CMS Made Simple home directory will be overwritten by the uploaded 'new' files contained in the diff package. Remember: It is always a safe practice to backup your CMS Made Simple installation before attempting any upgrade.
- Go to the Downloads page at http://www.cmsmadesimple.org/downloads
- Locate the section that says "Upgrade 1.2.2 to 1.2.3:"
- Choose one of the file packages, either the zip or tar.gz
- Once you've downloaded the package to your computer, expand the package.
- Once you've expanded the archive, simply ftp to your installation of CMS Made Simple and upload the new files and directories just as they are. They will overwrite the existing "old" files.
- Follow same procedure of Upgrading after 'Upload the new files, overwriting all the files on your server'.
- Notes:
- The FeedbackForms module is incompatible with 1.0 (fatal errors in admin area) before version 0.9.14, and you can't install that version prior to 1.0, so uninstall it before doing an upgrade to 1.0.
- If you don't have them already, install the new module manager and nuSOAP modules before installing upgrades to any other modules that you might need (in CMS Made Simple 1.4.1 (and maybe in earlier versions too?) both are available by default)).
- Notes for first timers:
- Backup your database. This is only necessary should something go wrong (but is a worthwhile practice). If all goes well you won't need the backup as your content will be preserved during the upgrade. If you have cpanel, the backup function copies the mySQL database to your PC. You may find it useful to backup any other files not included in the database, and don't forget to make a copy of robots.txt as it gets overwritten during the upgrade. Check your database backup- make sure it actually contains the files you expect.
- Backup your admin themes as an upgrade reset the default theme.
- Download the latest package to your PC. Unzip the file. In Windows, the zip file contains the folder, cmsmadesimple, with all the installation files and folders. Extract the folders and files from the zip file.
- Upload the new files. If you are using an FTP utility like WS_FTP, the same files and folders should be visible in both panes of the FTP utility (ie. local and remote). Select binary-auto. Select all the files and folders in the local pane and transfer them to the server. Depending upon your connection the transfer may take about 30 minutes to copy.
- Navigate, in your browser, to www.domain.com/install/upgrade.php or wherever you have installed CMS Made Simple. If you look in www.domain.com you will see a 'down for maintenance' message. The upgrade will update the config.php file, but needs write access to do this. Note the file access of config.php on your server, then change the access to 666, but don't forget to reset this when the installation is complete. The upgrade may prompt you to upgrade schema; just upgrade as requested.
- Delete the install folder after a successful upgrade, and update your robots.txt file. Don't copy the old file to the server, edit the new one on your server; there may be new records in the file that are not in your old copy.
- Tip: If you're upgrading a bunch of CMS Made Simple installs on the same server and have a slow Internet connection, copy the changed files into multiple folders on your local PC (one folder for each CMS Made Simple install), and then upload them all at once. :)
