Upgrading

To upgrade from a previous version of CMS Made Simple, do like this:

  1. Backup your database and all the files in your CMS Made Simple folder on the server.
  2. Download the latest CMS Made Simple package.
  3. Upload the new files, overwriting all the files on your server.
  4. Navigate to <cms made simple folder>/install/upgrade.php. That automatically makes any necessary changes in the database.
  5. Delete the install folder after a successful upgrade

If there is a patch upgrade available, otherwise known as a 'diff' such as cmsmadesimple-diff-1.2.2-1.2.3.zip (e.g. from 1.2.2 to 1.2.3), copy the archive into your cmsms home directory and unpack it there. It will unpack the changed files directly into their proper locations and not into a folder. There may not be an install script to run.

Alternatively for patch upgrades, you could download the 'diff' package to your desktop, expand it on your desktop, then open the folder and ftp the contents of the entire folder directly into your CMSMS home directory. The existing 'old' files in your CMSMS home directory will be overwritten by the uploaded 'new' files contained in the diff package. Remember, It is always a safe practice to backup your cmsms installation before attempting any upgrade.

  1. Go to the Downloads page at http://www.cmsmadesimple.org/downloads
  2. Locate the section that says "Upgrade 1.2.2 to 1.2.3:"
  3. Choose one of the file packages, either the zip or tar.gz
  4. Once you've downloaded the package to your computer, expand the package.
  5. Once you've expanded the archive, simply ftp to your installation of CMSMS and upload the new files and directories just as they are. They will overwrite the existing "old" files. There is no actual upgrade script that needs to be run for this particular type of upgrade.

Notes:

  • The FeedbackForms module is incompatible with 1.0 (fatal errors in admin area) before version 0.9.14, and you can't install that version prior to 1.0, so uninstall it before doing an upgrade to 1.0.
  • If you don't have them already, install the new module manager and nuSOAP modules before installing upgrades to any other modules that you might need.

Notes for first timers:

  1. Backup your database. This is only necessary should something go wrong (but is a worthwhile practice). If all goes well you won't need the backup as your content will be preserved during the upgrade. If you have cpanel, the backup function copies the mySQL database to your PC. You may find it useful to backup any other files not included in the database, and don't forget to make a copy of robots.txt as it gets overwritten during the upgrade.
  2. Backup your admin themes as an upgrade reset the default theme.
  3. Download the latest package to your PC. Unzip the file. In Windows, the zip file contains the folder, cmsmadesimple, with all the installation files and folders. Extract the folders and files from the zip file.
  4. Upload the new files. If you are using an FTP utility like WS_FTP, the same files and folders should be visible in both panes of the FTP utility (ie. local and remote). Select binary-auto. Select all the files and folders in the local pane and transfer them to the server. Depending upon your connection the transfer may take about 30 minutes to copy.
  5. Navigate, in your browser, to www.domain.com/install/upgrade.php or wherever you have installed CMSMS. If you look in www.domain.com you will see a down for maintenance message. The upgrade will update the config.php file, but needs write access to do this. Note the file access of config.php on your server, then change the access to 666, but don't forget to reset this when the installation is complete. The upgrade may prompt you to upgrade schema; just upgrade as requested.
  6. Delete the install folder after a successful upgrade, and update your robots.txt file. Don't copy the old file to the server, edit the new one on your server; there may be new records in the file that are not in your old copy.

Tips

Upgrade a bunch of CMSMS installs at once

If you're upgrading a bunch of CMSMS installs on the same server and have a slow Internet connection, copy the changed files into multiple folders on your local PC (one folder for each CMSMS install), and then upload them all at once. :)
